Neenah Paper, Appleton Mill, Appleton WI, is currently accepting resumes for an Environmental/Utilities Engineer.  This position reports to the Mill Manager.


The Environmental/Utilities Engineer is responsible for managing the environmental compliance programs at the Appleton Mill. This position is responsible for the management and reporting for: wastewater, air/boiler, solid waste, hazardous waste, stormwater, SPCC and spills, developing and maintaining required plans, permits and reports. Provides leadership and drive continuous improvement of the facility's environmental management systems.  This positions also serves as the administrator of the SDS system for the Appleton Mill.



The Environmental Engineer (preferred Environmental/Utilities Engineer) is responsible for the environmental compliance programs at the Appleton Mill, developing and maintaining required plans, permits and reports. Provides leadership and drive continuous improvement of the facility's environmental management systems. 


Applicable programs/systems include:

  • Title V air permit compliance and air emissions inventory reporting
  • Air pollution control equipment performance oversight and management of compliance monitoring data
  • Wastewater permit compliance
  • Industrial storm water permit compliance and storm water pollution prevention plan management
  • Tier II chemical inventory and Section 313 EPCRA reporting
  • Oil and chemical spill prevention and emergency preparedness planning
  • Hazardous and universal waste management
  • Non-hazardous waste management and recycling
  • Subsurface investigation/remedial action plan management
  • DOT HazMat compliance and container management practices
  • ISO 14001, Environmental Management System implementation
  • Oversight of compliance activities for the dam owned by the Appleton Mill
  • New chemical approval process and Safety Data Sheet management
  • Develop and administer employee training for environmental programs


This position may also oversee and supervise our Utility crew and operations (boilerhouse) which involves steam generation, water treatment, wastewater treatment, hydro-electricity generation and oversight of contracted dam tending operations.

  • Support processes and initiatives aimed at reducing operating costs, increasing employee involvement/ownership, and promoting continuous improvement
  • Promote and support cost reduction efforts

Environmental performance


  • Monitor environmental activities and ensure compliance at Appleton
  • Ensure Corporate Environmental Performance Standards are met and documented.
  • Participate and ensure environmental objectives are met
  • Maintain an environmental plan and coordinate regulatory compliance activities

  • Bachelors in environmental science, biology or related field;
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in an industrial/manufacturing setting;
  • State wastewater licenses a plus;
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations/requirements with emphasis on air, storm water, wastewater, and hazardous/nonhazardous waste, including state specific requirements is preferred;
  • Experience with ISO 14001 environmental management system preferred
  • Ability to interpret and report data and information accurately;
  • Proactive and assertive with sense of urgency to problem solving and incident investigation;
  • Able to communicate and effectively drive and train on environmental programs;
  • Good working knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements;
  • Ability to develop environmental procedures and effective action plans to drive continuous improvement of the facility's environmental programs and management systems.
