Neenah Paper, Appleton Mill, Appleton WI, is currently accepting resumes for a Filtration Development and Applications Engineer. 


This position will report to the Appleton Mill manager in alignment with the VP of Research and Development and Innovation and provide leadership and management direction to filtration Research and Development Projects and application engineering at the Appleton Mill.  Expectations include ensuring achievement of all mill and applicable US Filtration project objectives and to conform to established policies, procedures, guidelines, budgets and/or specifications and applicable local, state, and federal codes and laws. Responsible to oversee the Filtration production, start-up responsibility and product release responsibility including customer pilot runs (A4 and SAT).  Work with other leaders at the Appleton mill to influence decisions to positively affect overall growth of the filtration business based on A4 and SAT4.


The Filtration Development and Application Engineer will spend 12 months on assignment in Weidach, Germany. 


The initial focus of the Weidach assignment will be spent working in the Filtration quality lab to understand the technical qualities needed in filtration projects to meet the customer’s specifications by learning test methods and product requirements. 


In Appleton, this person will be responsible for managing the Testing and R and D Lab on the 2nd floor of the Appleton Saturation building.


Safety and Environment

  • Exercise personal leadership to provide an environment that puts a priority on providing a safe and healthy work City of Appleton, state of Wisconsin, and US federal codes and laws governing loss control.
  • Support the development of effective safety and environmental programs at the Appleton mill related to the materials used and produced especially for transfers from Germany.


Achieve long-term growth for the US Filtration Business Key Account Management; Product, Technology and Process Development

  • Technical support of filtration development projects in the US.
  • Manage the transition of grades to the Appleton mill on A4 and SAT4.
  • Recognize market trends and customer requirements in filtration and implement necessary changes in development, quality and production process to deliver differentiated solutions to the customer.
  • Planning, coordination and assistance of production trials in the Appleton mill
  • Assure cost effective and production of new and existing filtration grades for our customers.
  • Selection of raw materials, suppliers to assure quality, cost effective filtration production in the development area.
  • Maintain and assure filter efficiency is achieved through quality requirements, quality standards and the quality measures necessary in production.
  • Handle technical filtration claims with customers together with quality and sales, support production in solving the quality issues and install measures to avoid them in future.

Team Development

  • Partner with the Appleton mill team, especially manufacturing, quality, sales and lead efforts to achieve customer expectations and grow sales.
  • Provide training and transfer of experience to Appleton salaried leadership and hourly personnel.  Ensure the development of all employees to the maximum of their potential.
  • Maintain a positive labor relations climate.

 Support Strategic Initiatives

  • Encourage defined experimentation to meet the goals of the business: safety improvement, reduced COM, product development.




The successful candidate must have a Paper Science, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering degree with 4 to 6 years’ experience in the Papermaking or Filtration industry.


Key competencies for a person to be successful in this position are: technical competence, excellent communication skills, and being able to keenly listen and learn from our customers what their needs are and how they are able to differentiate their filters from the competition by providing a niche.
